Palm Compatibility with Microsoft Windows Vista and Office 2007

For the latest compatibility information for Palm’s desktop software, Windows Vista (all versions) and Microsoft Outlook 2007, please refer to Palm’s Windows Vista compatibility readiness web page.

Palm OS Device Customers:

At this time, Palm OS handheld and smartphone users will be able to install and use Palm Desktop and the HotSync Manager to synchronize data between their devices and Palm Desktop running on any version of Windows Vista.

The Palm Quick Install application, LifeDrive Manager, and Tungsten T5 Manager applications do not currently work when installed on Windows Vista (all versions).

The Palm Microsoft Outlook conduits do not currently support Microsoft Office 2007. If you want to synchronize your personal information manager (PIM) data with Microsoft Office 2007 before Palm makes their update available, you will need to purchase a copy of Chapura PocketMirror Standard or Professional. More information about PocketMirror Professional can be found here:

Bundled and retail versions of DataViz Documents To Go do not currently support Microsoft Office 2007. DataViz is currently working on an update.

Please check with third-party developers for additional compatibility information.

Windows Mobile Treo Customers:

Starting with Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft is no longer using the ActiveSync software that shipped on your Treo software CD. You will need to use Microsoft’s Windows Media Device Center software which only works with Windows Vista and completely replaces Microsoft ActiveSync.

For more information on how to configure your Windows Mobile Treo to work with Windows Mobile Device Center, please refer to the following Microsoft support article:

I know that many people are eager to upgrade to the latest Microsoft software. However, being an early adopter is not always a smooth transition. Many vendors are working to update there software now that Microsoft Windows Vista and Office 2007 have been officially release to the consumer market. Your patience is appreciated.

Chapura PocketMirror Standard requires that Palm Desktop be installed. I've not been able to find/install a version of Palm Desktop that will allow either a Visor Pro or Tungsten E to sync with the Palm Desktop which seems to be a requirement before I can get PocketMirror to hotsync to Outlook 2007. I have driver problems with my USB connection to Palm Desktop.

I know for a fact that the download versions of Palm Desktop will work with the Tungsten E and the Handspring Visor devices. You can download generic versions of Palm Desktop from the Palm downloads page.

There have been people reporting that they have not been able to HotSync under Windows Vista. I'm not surprised, actually. Microsoft has released a massive compatibility update that fixes a compatibility issue with HotSync Manager 6.0.x. It should be available from Windows Update. I have no idea if that will fix the issue or not.

Chapura PocketMirror (Standard and Professional) is a set of replacement conduits that allows you to synchronize the Palm PIMs with Outlook.

I can't speak to your USB driver issue(s).

I should be clear, I know that the generic versions of Palm Desktop work with the Visor and the Tungsten E under Windows XP.

It's completely absurd that Palm's not updated their conduits to provide compatibility with Outlook 2007.

Sounds like they're too busy eating donuts or something -- it can't be _that_ difficult to put together!

It isn't that Palm won't update their conduit to work with Outlook 2007. They just haven't completed the update yet.

I'd also like to point out that Microsoft's Windows Mobile Device Center doesn't support Outlook 2007 yet either. What have _they_ been up to? Why is Palm being criticized for not having their updates out before Microsoft?

At any rate, being an early adopter of new technology hurts. I can feel your pain, but I've been through too many upgrade cycles and have had to deal with too many broken things over the years. I'll wait a few months before I even consider upgrading.

I just wanted a straight-forward answer to a straight-forward question. "Which devices will sync to my Vista Outlook 2007 (esp. the 700wx?). Got to http://www.palm.com/us/support/palmdesktop.html and the prompts only directly address XP & 2000. I thought I just make a quick call to support and ask there. I am voice-hell with some voice cutting in and out saying lord-knows-what.

I don't think I am going to buy a Palm.

Sorry to hear that you are having such trouble with Vista and Outlook 2007. When you use Widows Mobile devices, such as the Treo 700wx, you must use Microsoft's synchronization software. Micorsoft ActiveSync 4.x works with the 700wx on Windows XP. With Vista, Microsoft requires that all Windows Mobile device users, including Treo 700w/wx and 750 customers to use the new Windows Mobile Device Manager which is now part of Windows. Palm has no control over this decision.

Palm has two links back to Microsoft for customers who need assistance with Windows Mobile Device Center, which can be accessed here.
